PLANET ROCK is very proud to present "the world’s only 4,000 year-old rock band” as described by none other than WILLIAM BURROUGHS. hailing from MOROCCO's remote RIF mountains, they are arguably the most legendary ensemble in so-called world music, THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA (now led by BACHIR ATTAR) gained significant notoriety in the sixties as the soundtrack to the north african diaspora of the BEATNIK movement (BRION GYSIN, PAUL BOWLES, WILLIAM BURROUGHS, ALLEN GINSBERG, et al). the group achieved worldwide acclaim when the late ROLLING STONE, BRIAN JONES, visited JAJOUKA and recorded them in ceremony shortly before his untimely passing. these seminal recordings were released on the STONES' own label in 1971 as the now classic album, "BRIAN JONES PRESENTS THE PIPES OF PAN AT JOUJOUKA".
THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA LED BY BACHIR ATTAR's music goes way back to the days before the muslim invasion and is still tied to their ancient ceremonial traditions including the festival of BOUJELOUD, where the unmistakable trance sounds of the GHAITA (a double reed instrument) invoke the spirit of fertility. they have influenced some of contemporary music’s most influential artists, have been featured in many major motion pictures and documentaries and, have collaborated with the likes of TALVIN SINGH, THE ROLLING STONES on their STEEL WHEELS album and BILL LASWELL who produced one of their most powerful recordings, APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY. most notably, ORNETTE COLEMAN (who recorded with them as early as 1973) continues to play shows with them including 9 dates at LONDON’s 2009 MELTDOWN FESTIVAL and at NORTH SEA JAZZ in ROTTERDAM in july 2010.
july 2011 marked their return to GERMANY (after almost 20 years) - the MASTER MUSICIANS played RUDOLSTADT, the country's most important world music festival, the HOUSE OF WORLD CULTURES in BERLIN and presented their collaboration with american producer DUB GABRIEL, JAJOUKA SOUNDSYSTEM live in concert for the very first time!
