"wow - what a show they put on!" - GILLES PETERSON
founded 1971 at ohio's legendary ANTIOCH college where, among others, CECIL TAYLOR was teaching as a professor, this then very youthful group soon embarked on an amazing cultural odyssey which lead them via europe (important stops included AMSTERDAM and PARIS) to AFRICA. there they visited the legendary rock churches in LALIBELA (ETHOPIA) which lent one of their albums the name and lived in GHANA and KENYA for a while, listening to and playing with local master musicians all along the way.
2007 brought a highly energetic reunion of the group, boosting their trademark sound of massive afrocentric drumming meets ecstatic group improvisations. THE PYRAMIDS' extensive european tour late in 2010 turned out to be a great triumph: the collective received rave reviews and standing ovations in every city they played in… on a recent summer tour they were able to repeat their initial success, blew GILLES PETERSON's mind on a show at WORLDWIDE FESTIVAL and recorded a new album (the first one since 1977!) at the studio of krautrock legends FAUST in south germany.
early in 2012 they celebrated their UK debut with a fantastic two-night-residency at LONDON's legendary CAFÉ OTO and a stint at GILLES PETERSON's WORLDWIDE AWARDS (THE PYRAMIDS' spiritual and musical leader, IDRIS ACKAMOOR, was honored with an award for "lifetime achievements" there).
